a small house with some interesting and intimate spaces on a generous suburban site, however lacking the internal space required for a family. deciding how to add to a house that already had an inappropriate extension, started with the removal of that extension, to restore the original house to its recognisable form. now it was possible to explore the design of the required additional space. the design solution attaches an additional two storey extension to the rear of the existing building. this extension is designed to integrate physically and spatially, but contrast aesthetically with the original building. the ground floor accommodates living, kitchen and dining in a single split level space, allowing a more direct relationship to the extensive south facing gardens. the upper floor extends the families bedroom accommodation and restructures the internal circulation by addition of a new stairs. the external finishes take their reference from the existing building, the ground floor in masonry construction with a semi-rough cast/pebble dash finish, and the upper floor in timber construction with a timber cladding externally.
